Kung-fu Novice Grading, September 7th

This past week marked the beginning of more than one new school year. Kitchener Kicks kicked off its "Back to School" with a novice belt grading, where students who studied through the summer were tested to see if they were ready to move to the next grade in their martial arts journey.

After a shaky start, they all pulled up their (no)socks, focused and worked hard (including Sifu Raquel).

In the end their hard work was rewarded with new belts/sashes. Congratulations everyone!!

Please note that we have a "Back to School" special for the month of September. Call the club at (519) 741-5425 for more details. For current members, if there is someone you think would benefit from Martial Arts training, please let them know about the special.

Summer is here, and it's a busy one!

Summer is finally here, and at Kitchener Kicks that means one thing...okay, maybe it means three things: summer camp, a tournament and a grading.

Kitchener Kicks Summer Camp
Last week was the first week of the annual two-week karate/kung-fu summer camp that the kids look forward to every year. The week was filled with activities including guest speakers, park trips, board breaking, a mini tournament and more. The week ended with Sigung revealing their surprise trip...to Grand River Rocks, a rock climbing gym. Summer camp at Kitchener Kicks definitely ROCKS!

Daypuck London Tournament
Saturday saw our Scarlet Dragons compete at the Daypuck tournament in London. The team once again did an amazing job representing Kitchener Kicks and made us proud, bringing their best. Go BLACK!! (Aren't the new uniforms fantastic -- we definitely stand out!)

Kickboxing Grading
Sunday we were back in the club for the kickboxing grading. It was a grueling two hours, but in the end everyone was wearing new bruises, smiles and a new belt. Good work and congratulations to all who participated!

Scarlet Dragon Demo at the KW Multicultural Festival

Kitchener Kicks is a proud supporter of the diverse community in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, and once again showed their support by performing at the Multicultural Festival held in Victoria Park this past weekend. It was a beautiful hot and sunny day as the team took the stage and wowed the crowd. They definitely earned themselves one of those massive freshly squeezed lemonades! Fantastic job once again Scarlet Dragons!!

Scarlet Dragon Demo at the World Partnership Walk

The Scarlet Dragon demo team performed at the World Partnership Walk this past weekend, giving the audience a taste of what we learn and do at Kitchener Kicks. The sun was shining and the crowd was cheering as the team took to the stage and put on an amazing performance. The crowd grew as the performance went on and so did the applause from the crowd.

Great job team!

Kung-fu Novice Grading, June 1st

This weekend held another novice belt grading where the students were tested on what they had learned so far in their martial arts journey, and to see if they were ready to take the next step. They all came prepared and worked very hard and in the end were rewarded with new belts/sashes. Congratulations everyone!!

A special mention goes out to our father and son team, Peter and Adam, who celebrated both getting new yellow sashes and both their birthdays all on the same day.

We'd also like to congratulate our two Dragon Hearts on their new belts.

From from Barrie to Georgetown

May was a busy month for Kitchener Kicks and the Scarlet Dragons. After a successful Karate Maynia, the Dragons headed to Barrie the next weekend for the Bushido Open hosted by RMA. Everyone did very well and made us proud.

This past weekend took the team to Georgetown for the Crispin Super Shiai bringing home a lot of hardware, making us wonder where to put them all... Congrats Team!

Karate Kung-Fu Maynia - May the 4th be with you!

Kitchener Kicks held their annual Ron Day Memorial tournament, Karate Kung-Fu Maynia, on May 4th this year. It was an incredible day and success as we welcomed our largest turnout ever to Conestoga College. With the big trophies looming in the background there was a great energy in the air and the competition was fierce.

It was great to see so many Kitchener Kicks students at the tournament, especially those competing in their first one! We'd like to thank all of our competitors and all their families who made the tournament such a success. We'd also like to thank all the volunteers, without whom the day would not have happened.

We are already working on next year's tournament and have some great changes in store. See you in 2014!

Mississauga Martial Arts Open, April 21 2013

Sunday brought not only a kickboxing grading but a tournament for two of the Scarlet Dragons in Mississauga. The site was a club in Mississauga and was crowded with the large number of competitors. Josh P and Cameron C were the only ones representing our club, and represent they did.

Cameron Placed 2nd in weapons, 2nd in forms, and a 3rd in sparring. Josh placed 1st in weapons, 4th in forms and a 5th in sparring.

The first place finish allowed Josh to compete for the 16 and under all belts Grand Champion. He was competing against 2 brown, 1 blue, 2 green and a yellow belt. His nerves where calmed with a little coaching and some inner focus. Josh put on the performance of his martial arts career and proved that technique and dedication would earn him top marks and see him presented as the 16 and under all belt Grand Champion. Congratulations to both for their strong showing!

Kickboxing Grading, April 21 2013

A grueling Sunday was on tap for several of our Kickboxers. 12 entered, and 12 were pushed to the brink and beyond. Sweat mixed with tears and bag work, combinations, and push ups as everyone pushed their minds, bodies and spirits to attain their next belt on their journey up the ranks.

Of those grading, 5 students were working to attain higher belts, so as the novices finished their grading, the others were in store for more!!

2013 CKKA Friendship Tournament

The annual CKKA tournament and banquet was held in Toronto this year and as usual, we had a great turnout from Kitchener Kicks. The day began with workshop pods where kids and adults learned new techniques and styles, including Self-Defense, Stick Fighting, Extreme Martial Arts, Vital Point Targeting, and Muay Thai just to name a few. Our own Sigung Dave taught the Kickboxing Techniques pod.

The afternoon saw the tournament part of the day where our Scarlet Dragons once again made us proud, showing their sportsmanship and skill. We brought home the President's Cup for team champions and brought back the Champion's Cup for junior team champions (videos on our Facebook page). In the individual events, the team came home with 25 firsts, 13 seconds, 11 thirds and 6 fourths. A special mention goes out to Jaden, one of our Dragon Hearts who brought home one of the first place trophies.

Next year, Kingston!!

London, Ottawa,The Worlds????

One of our own will be heading to Ottawa in May to compete in the Canadian Qualifiers for the WKC, and hopefully with hard work and determination (which he has plenty of ) will go on to Italy for the Worlds!

Cameron C. was the lone representative of Kitchener Kicks at the Provincial Qualifier in London this past weekend. He placed first in "Kung Fu Forms", second in "Continuous Sparring" even though it's not something we practice here at Kitchener Kicks a lot, Cameron's technique and style prevailed. With the toughest and biggest competition yet to come, Cameron went in determined and finished fifth in "Traditional Weapons" qualifying him for the Canadians in all the events he entered.

With 3 events in the top 8 Cameron will be heading to Ottawa on the May long weekend to compete in the National qualifiers where if he finishes in the top four he will be off to Italy!! He will be taking with him the hopes and encouragement of all his martial family. Good Luck Cameron!!!!

Spring is coming in like a Dragon...

It's been a busy time at the club, and jumping right into things, here's the update from Gatineau: Cameron brought home firsts in continuous sparring and forms, second in weapons and fifth in sparring.

This past Sunday was a busy day both at the club and on the road. A group of the Scarlet Dragons went to a tournament in Georgetown and brought home some nice hardware. Others were saving their strength for an afternoon of grading...

First the tournament. Thanks to Rampulla's Martial Arts for a great event! Our five Dragons who competed brought home 2 firsts, 7 seconds, 4 thirds, and 4 fourths. Good work team!

Meanwhile, at the club, a group of students were psyching themselves up for their High Belt grading! A grueling 4 hours for our newest orange and green stripes, and 6+ hours for everyone else. Everyone was put to the test early. Pushups, bicycles, kicks, blocks, punches, and more pushups. Something else was evident early on: Sehang John was going to be pushed to the limits required to obtain Sifu status.

In the end they all rose to the challenge and went home with new belts and sashes and sore muscles. Congratulations to all, especially our newest Sifu, Sifu John!

From North Bay ON to Gatineau QC

Some of our Scarlet Dragons have made some trips to some far off places to show off their stuff. Jacob D traveled to the great white north to compete as Kitchener Kicks lone representative! The long drive was not fruitless as Jacob came home with a Second in Weapons and a 3rd in forms.

Our other adventurer Cameron C. will be heading to Gatineau QC to compete in a WKC event for a warm up to the provincial qualifier in April. Good Luck Cameron, and keep your hands up.

March 'Break' Camp

Kitchener Kicks held another successful March 'Break' Camp again this year, treating the kids to a week of hard work and fun.

Campers had a full week of activities including guest speakers, board breaking, a mini tournament with some amazing trophies, and more. The week finished with everyone hitting the lanes at the local bowling alley.

Novice Grading, March 2 2013

One of the largest gradings saw the handing out of many new belts as young novices took some of the first steps on their life-long Martial Arts Journey. They did push ups, punches, kicks, forms and sparring for over a 3 hour period. Three of the students made the leap from the kids class into the world of the adult classes. Although these disciples knew their stuff, the pressure of the grading was evident in the the final hour, as they began to look fatigued, they persevered though and made it through. Congratulations to the 33 boys and girls who were presented with their new belts (and 3 sashes).

With some of them in their first grading they can now be prepared for their next one, and although it may be tougher and longer, the ground work is there for the development of some of the next great martial artists.

Jump over to our Facebook Page to see some of the pictures!

March 9th also saw a Karate Grading.

Three people graded with all three getting their belts a Yellow, an Orange, and yes, the latest addition to the long list of Sensei's, our newest

 Blackbelt..Jesse Guile. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!

Kicking it in Steel Town

The Scarlet Dragons headed down Hwy 6 to compete in Hamilton on February 9th. Going in after a great tournament in Toronto determined to bring home more awards, the Dragons did not disappoint! 12 firsts, 2 seconds, 8 thirds, and 27 fourths and fifths.

Lots of practice and hard work will only lead to more and more. As the tournament trail gets into full swing we can look forward to a great season!!

'Back in Black' Attack

The tournament season started with a bang this year at the Toronto Tournament of Martial Art Champions. The Scarlet Dragon team was back in force and brought home some major hardware, including 19 firsts, 15 seconds, 11 thirds and 41 fourths and fifths -- for a total of 86 awards.

We also came home with our first triple crown of the year!

Great work Dragons, keep it up!

Friday, February 8, 2013

Even with the white stuff piling up outside, The Scarlet Dragons melted a path to the club. I'm sure the NMAC tournament tomorrow will be the proving ground. 23 members will be travelling down the 401 to compete and pick up some awards. These are for the competitors that accumulated points on the 2012 tournament circuit.  Good Luck to all. Be sure to check back for updated results and photos.
